Portland & Columbia River Gorge

  • Pioneer courthouse square Portland United States (map)

This trip consists of 2 days exploring the city of Portland and 2 days driving up and down Columbia River Gorge.

On Wednesday upon arrival, we will take a train from airport first to the hotel to check-in and then, to the city center where we will hop on a city trolley to loop Portland’s all 13 stops in order to familiarize ourselves with the city a bit.

On Thursday we plan to explore the Washington Park area along with famous Powell’s City of Books. These two days involve active walking as we will not rent a car up until Friday.

Friday morning we plan to take a shuttle back to the airport to rent a car and from there we will be on our way to visit the chain of Columbia Gorge waterfalls. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is a spectacular canyon where the Columbia River cuts through the Cascade mountains - with cliffs and overlooks of Washington to the north and Oregon's mountains and waterfalls to the south.

The canyon is 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep, that meanders past cliffs, spires, and ridges set against nearby peaks of the Pacific Northwest's Cascade Mountain Range. Shaped by ancient volcanoes and floods, the Gorge is also rich in culture and history, and home to 75,000 people.

The sightseeing of the entire waterfalls area is doable in one day even with hikes. Most popular trails are easy to reach and accomplish.

On Saturday we will spend time exploring Mt. Hood National Forest. Scenic charms in the national forest range from waterfalls, hot springs, and glaciers to varied wildlife and alpine wildflowers.

Sunday we will return to the airport to depart home.
